What Could Make a Good Teacher?

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth." - Dan Rather.
It goes without saying that teaching is a very specific and difficult job. The teacher is a person who is learning as well as teaching all his life. Teachers do not only teach their subjects, but they put their hearts and souls into their work. They have a feel for the children, develop their pupil’s intellect, and form their views and characters, their attitudes to life and to other people. They know pupils like the back of their hands and always can help to cope with their problems. It’s a great responsibility and the teacher must be a model of competence himself. A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.
To be a good teacher we should follow the following principles:
1. Build on the talents of pupils, rather than criticizing their defects.
2. Encourage pupils to follow their goals.
3. Be attentive and sensitive to the needs, problems and environment in which pupils study and spend their time out of school and home.
4. Help and support pupils when they come across a difficulty or a dead end (here I mean such things as early smoking, drugs, missing school, etc).
5. Justice must be observed between all pupils.
6. Keep the channel of communication open with pupils at all times.
7. Teach pupils manners and etiquette with your actions, rather than your words.
8. Warm, loving words said to the pupils will have more of an affect than harsh ones.
So, to conclude I should warn you future teachers that the teacher’s influence on pupil’s minds is great and becoming teachers we take great responsibility. Teachers combine qualities of parents, friends, helpers, advisers, instructors, medical assistants, guards and many others. Following basic principles I’ve written about will help us to cope with all teacher’s responsibilities which can be summed up as: first, be a model ourselves; second, be always attentive to pupils and open to them; third, teach and connect your subject with real life and skills necessary for it.
