| Teaching speaking
Why don’t students talk in the English language classroom ? • A lack of vocabulary • They lack confidence • Lack of experience/knowledge • Lack of encouragement • Don’t realize how much English they know • Teacher doesn’t insist on English being used in the classroom. • Teacher doesn’t use English
Encouraging Students to speak in Class
It can be very difficult to get students to speak English in class. Here are 3 typical problems with some ideas for solutions
PROBLEM SOLUTION Students won’t say anything Perhaps students don’t like speaking in front of the whole class. One solution is to put them in pairs or small groups, to encourage shy students to feel secure . another way of encouraging them to speak is to tell them you will give them a grade at the end of the course for their speaking and that and you will assess them continually. Students working in pairs or groups don’t speak in English Is the activity interesting and at the right level for the abilities of the students? Would you expect beginners to use English 10% of the time? Your job here is to monitor carefully and try to pick up on problems . Speaking in a foreign language can be embarrassing and even scary . Give your students lots of reassurance that they can do it When all the students are speaking , the classroom gets very noisy and I can’t control them. A noisy classroom is not an out of control classroom , as long as the students are using English and are focussed on task . You will know this as you walk around and monitor what they are doing . If you feel your colleagues or principal might object to so much noise , you could invite them into the classroom to see what the students are doing . Sometimes classes do get carried away and out of control . You could stop the activity and do something quiet to calm them down , then return to the original task later .
